At some point in their history, each automotive brand has known a deep crisis leading to the birth of a modern model to make sure it would survive. In 1933, Citroën is in an extremely difficult financial situation. Its cars are getting old and even though they benefited from the latest technological novelties, Citroën desperately needs a new model. 
Starting with a few simple guidelines – a top speed of 100km/h, a gas mileage of less than 10l per 100km, unibody construction, front-wheel drive and automatic gearbox – Citroën creates a car which turned out to be one of the most revolutionary vehicles: the Traction Avant. Within a few weeks, three prototypes are assembled; the car is reliable, except for the gearbox, quickly replaced by a manual unit. 
In 1934, the Traction Avant 7 is released. Very soon, several different variants will appear, all available as a sedan, a convertible and a “faux-cabriolet”, which is a coupe. In 1938, the top of range 15-6 appears, but is only offered in sedan. Equipped with a 2.9-liter, 6-cylinder engine good for 77 hp, only 2,500 15/6 are produced before the start of the Second World War, and production stops. 
When production is resumed in 1946, Citroën discontinues the convertible and coupe versions of the 4-cylinder Traction Avants. As for the 15-6, it is only available in black until 1952. When the production of the 15/6 finally ceases in 1954, 50.000 units have been built, a very small number when compared to the 760.000 Traction Avant produced. 
Unlike the 4-cylinder Tractions, the 15/6 convertible was never produced. Legend has it that 6 shells were built before the war for the Michelin family, of which only 3 were produced as complete cars by the Citroën factory. A large number of replicas, whether good or bad, exist today.
